Literally, the term Dakshinamurti means the one who faces south, which is the direction connected to transformation, rejuvenation, and change. Shiva explains the ageless principles of vocal and instrumental music in the aspect of Vinadhara, the vina player, which is understood to bring about release (moksha) without stress. According to Indian philosophy, music is similar to yogic practice in that both need mental absorption, breath control, and eventual liberation from all mental preoccupation.
