Chaturmukha Linga:
Because the Chaturmukha linga was carved to depict human faces rather than a reduced phallic form, it is a sort of mukhalinga (Sanskrit, meaning the linga with a face). The faces stand for Vamadeva, Tatpurusha, Aghora, Sadyojata, and Isana, the five facets of Shiva, the Hindu god connected to linga worship. There was probably a matching number of doorways in the shrine where the linga was located and the number of faces etched into it.
